MEET THE STAFF
Dr. Jonathan Bense, Optometrist



Dr. Bense was trained in Northern Ireland at the University of Ulster in Coleraine. After completion of his BSc Honours in Optometry degree in 2003 Dr. Bense completed a one-year work term at Specsavers Optical, also located in Ireland, and then completed the Canadian standard assessment of optometry in the summer of 2006. Specsavers optical is arguably the top optical in the world with over $1 billion in glasses and contact lens sales per year through its many branches worldwide. During Dr. Bense’s training at Specsavers he was trained by several optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, which has proven to be an invaluable asset. With Dr. Bense’s vast knowledge of the eye, spectacle frames, lenses and contact lenses, Bense Optical has something for everyone.

Gary and Wayne Gillard, Dispensing Opticians

  

Wayne and Gary have each over 40 years of experience in the optical business. They owned Hugh Gillard optical, a well-respected private optical here in St.John’s for many years. In the past year the Gillard’s and the Bense team joined forces after realising there was a need for a more comprehensive eye care facility in the province. Gary is also a licensed contact lens fitter who takes care of Bense Optical’s contact lens practice.

Alex McKinney, Dispensing Optician student



Alex has completed her dispensing course and is now a registered dispensing optician at Bense Optical. Recently she successfully completed her first year of a 2 year contact lens practitioners course.
