It is important to understand that vision is learned; similar to the many other skills a
baby develops over time.  As an infant grows, they learn to coordinate both eyes
together, follow target objects, focus at various distances, and process what they are
looking at. If these crucial skills are not properly developed, many different visual
problems can arise.  Amblyopia (or commonly referred to as a “lazy eye”) and
strabismus (eye turn) are only a few examples of serious vision threatening
conditions a child may face if these basic skills are underdeveloped. If not caught
and treated appropriately, a child’s capability to learn about the world around them
could be greatly hindered.

While a child may never complain about their vision, or even if they do see “20/20”,
conditions such as the ones mentioned above may present as headaches, irritability,
clumsiness, loss of attention, or a lack of interest in reading.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists strongly recommends that children as young
as 6 months old should receive regular eye exams to identify and treat vision
problems to ultimately promote a healthy visual system.
